Lokomotive stadium construction (now Olympiysky) started in July 1955. Workers from the Railroad constructing and assembling Unit N1 set up the enabling works at the acacia overgrown wasteland. The stadium was designed by architects E.Revin and V.Golubkov. The stands seating capacity was 35 000 seats. It was planned to set the stadium into operation in 1956, but only on August 13, 1958 'Loko' opened its gates to the public with 13 of 32 sectors foreseen for 20 000 Audience.
The stadium construction was completed in 1970. On August 2, The Railroad Worker's Day, the stadium was officially opened. Like Shakhtar stadium it could seat 42 000 people, but its gallery encompassed 10 - 12 000 people more.
The latest reconstruction was finished in 2003. The impressive venue hosted Ukrainian U-21 matches, domestic and international matches of Metalurh Donetsk. Since March 2004 FC Shakhtar Donetsk has been playing its home matches on the Olympiysky pitch.
