Before the match
After the friendly vs Proleter in the morning, the Orange-and-Blacks will meet with the Austrian Wolfsberger at their home ground. Thus, the maximum number of players working on the second training camp will get some balanced playing workload again. Shakhtar have reached the halfway point of their pre-season summer training. We want to remind you that Luis Castro’s men will hold their first competitive game vs Dynamo in Odesa on July 28.
Wolfsberger was founded in 1931 and represents the town of Wolfsberg (the federal state of Carinthia). In 2012, under the leadership of Croatian Nenad Bjelica, the club reached the first Austrian Bundesliga, finishing his debut season in the 5th spot, just one step away from the European competition berth. In 2015, he repeated this result and that was enough for them to qualify for the Europa League qualifying stage: Wolfsberger made it past Shakhtyor Soligorsk and were knocked out of the competition by Borussia Dortmund.
Last season, the club achieved the best result in its history – the third spot and the Europa League group stage berth. Before that campaign, Wolfsberger was headed by Gerhard Struber, who brought Red Bull U19 (Salzburg) to the UEFA Youth League knockout stage eighteen months ago. The team’s the-then outstanding strikers Romano Schmid, Anderson Nyangbo, and Alexander Schmidt also joined the Miners’ opposing side as players on loan, with the 33-year-old midfielder Michael Liendl becoming the leading player last season (12 goals, 11 assists).
