U21. Vorskla vs Shakhtar: match preview
On Saturday, in the 4th round of the Ukrainian U21 league, the Pitmen will play Vorskla in Poltava. We bring you the match preview.
August 8, Poltava, Ltava stadium, 16:00
Shakhtar U21, after playing three rounds, have become the league’s sole leaders. Miguel Cardoso’s team did not lose any points, topping the table after beating Oleksandriya, Volyn and Hoverla. Shakhtar’s past round rivals made the first misfire, having lost at home to Dnipro reserve team (1-2), going third in the table with six points.
Last season, Vorskla reserve team found themselves in front of the Pitmen, having claimed the third spot following the U21 championship results, so the current match is of fundamental importance for the opponents. It is noteworthy that Shakhtar U21 spent the entire past season in Poltava, playing home matches at Lokomotiv stadium and at the training base Poltava in the settlement of Kopyly.

Shakhtar first team players Mykola Matviienko and Sergiy Gryn took the field in all three games of the U21 championship this season, with striker Gryn scoring a goal in every game and sharing the top goalscoring spot with four players from other teams. In the past round game vs Hoverla (4-1), the defender Serhiy Kryvtsov, who is recovering from injury, played for Miguel Cardoso’s side.
Last season, Vorskla and Shakhtar exchanged home wins. At Ltava stadium on July 31, Poltava side claimed a 2-1 win at 37 C. The Pitmen equalized in that game just before the break, when the striker Andriy Boryachuk got his name on the scoresheet. The hosts notched the decisive goal in the 75th minute, while the Donets side were completing the game with ten men due to a player sent off. No less dramatic was the second round meeting at Poltava training facility on February 27 this year. Donetsk have been able to snatch victory owing to a goal by midfielder Oleksandr Zubkov in the third injury time minute – 1-0. The scorer of the winning goal appeared on the field immediately after the break.
