Introducing opponents: Rapid Wien

In the Champions League play-off round, Shakhtar will meet with Vienna-based SK Rapid. Traditionally, we introduce you to the opponents.

This club is one of the oldest in Europe. It was founded in 1898. In the early twentieth century, football in Austria was developing at a pace to be envied. Soon, they organised the domestic league. And already in 1912, Rapid won gold medals for the first time. Since then and to this day, this team have been leaders of the Austrian football. They boast a tally of 32 championships, 14 domestic Cups and three Super Cups. The Vienna-based club also repeatedly took part in European club competitions. However, in the current Champions League history, they have never made it past the group stage.

This season, teams have played two games in the Austrian league. At the moment, Rapid are topping the standings with the maximum possible six points.

The club leaders are the defenders Thomas Schrammel and Christopher Dibon, the midfielder Steffen Hofmann and striker Robert Beric.

The team mentor is Zoran Barisic. This Austrian specialist has been working with Rapid’s coaching staff since 2006. He was promoted to the team manager post in 2013.
