Before match

Both teams played in the European competitions this week, and it could explain some changes to the starting line-ups. Anton Kanibolotskyy was stationed in Shakhtar’s goal, Ivan Ordets and Oleksandr Kucher operated in the centre of defence, with Ismaily fielded at left back. Besides, Bernard also started the game. Vorskla had a certain goalkeeping problem: both keepers – Bogush and Nepogodov – are out with injuries, so the Vorskla coach had to deploy young Tkachenko, who made his debut in the Premier League. For Shakhtar’s forward Oleksandr Gladkyy, today’s match was the 250th in the top flight of the Ukrainian football.

First half

The Poltava side started the game more energetically and as early as on opening seconds took a shot goalwards – the Pitmen’s goalkeeper made a confident save. And on 10 minutes, Alex Teixeira came close to bearing down on goal following a pass from Bernard but the opposition goalkeeper rushed out of goal to make an interception. Straight after that episode Bernard earned a dangerous free kick, but Ismaily fired the ball wide of the mark after a pass from Srna.

On 27 minutes, Kanibolotskyy parried away a powerful shot from Tursunov from a tight angle towards the near corner. Shakhtar responded with a dangerous free kick taken by Srna – the ball took a deflection and went out for a corner, and in the next attack conducted by the Poltava side Kanibolotskyy put on a fine display to keep out a Gromov effort. Bernard had a chance when he hit a first time shot just wide of the goal post. The Pitmen opened the scoring on 39 minutes: Teixeira drilled a cross from the left to Gladkyy, who was brought down by Dallku, but the ball bounced to Marlos who made it 1-0.

The referee added one minute of stoppage time, and Vorskla managed to equalise. Goal was scored a free kick: Gromov fired a powerful shot, Kanibolotskyy parried away only for Barannik to make it 1-1.

Second half

During the half time break, the hosts made two changes but the Pitmen took control of the game straight away. Marlos expertly took a low shot towards the far corner from the penalty area line – Tkachenko parried away a shot for a corner at the last moment. Soon, Marlos sent the ball straight into goalkeeper’s arm in a similar situation. And then the Pitmen’s head coach Mircea Lucescu made two substitutions, bringing on Viktor Kovalenko and Eduardo, and it immediately brought fruit. On 65 minutes, Kucher found Eduardo inside the penalty area with a long ball for the latter to receive the pass and easily beat the opposition goalkeeper – 2-1.

The Pitmen could have increased their lead on a number of occasions. Kovalenko saw his shot hit the goalkeeper, Dentinho’s shot was blocked by defenders, and Teixeira sent the ball just wide of the far post after bearing down on goal on 85 minutes. And Vorskla, who had no chances during the whole second half, got back into the game in the added minute: Kovpak headed the ball in following a cross from the left to the near post to make it 2-2.

The Pitmen will play their next match in Odesa against Dnipro. The match will take place on Friday, 14 August.
