Introducing opponents: Lechia (Poland)

On July 4, in the LOTTO Lubelskie Cup competition in Poland, Shakhtar will take on Lechia Gdansk. Let’s take a closer look at the opponents.

The club was founded in 1945. They did not have to go a long way as amateurs. Just three years later, the team advanced to the elite division – the Ekstraklasa. And in 1956, they won their first trophy – the domestic league bronze. Also in 1983, Lechia lifted the domestic Cup and Super Cup. Currently, the team of Gdansk still perform in the Ekstraklasa. Last season, they finished fifth from top.

The team leaders are defender and captain Rafał Janicki, Paweł Stolarski, midfielders Bruno Nazário and Stojan Vranješ with striker Adam Buksa.

Their home ground is PGE Arena Gdansk having the capacity of 44,000. This arena hosted the UEFA EURO 2012 games.

Since 2014, the team has been coached by Jerzy Brzęczek. Earlier this specialist headed the Polish Raków Częstochowa.
