Shakhtar at Euro 2015: Ukraine lost to Greece

In the debut game of the final part of the European Championship 2015, 6 July, Ukraine U19 faced the competition hosts – Greece national team. The match featured Shakhtar’s Academy players: Mykola Matvienko, Igor Kirykhantsev, Viktor Kovalenko, Andriy Boryachuk, Denys Arendaruk and Oleksandr Zubkov.

The opponents set the high tempo of the game straight from the opening minutes. Ukrainians were energetically hitting goalwards, but shots from Zinchenko, Kovalenko and Besedin did not reach the target. The Greeks responded with a dangerous chance on twenty minutes; Orfanidis opened the scoring. After scoring a goal, Greece started operating with a bigger focus on defence, Ukraine managed to make the situation dangerous less frequently. Kovalenko fired from distance on many occasions – Kotsarsis played great on both occasions. On 76 minutes, the hosts organised a counterattacking move, which resulted in a Karakhalios goal following a pass from Orfanidis. In the end of the game, Oleksandr Holovko’s charges rushed forward, but the Greeks managed to hold onto their win.
