Shakhtar at 2015 FIFA U-20 World Cup: Ukraine lost on penalties and left competition
On June 10, Ukraine met with Senegal in the 2015 FIFA U-20 World Cup. Shakhtar Academy boys Bohdan Sarnavskyi, Viktor Kovalenko and Artem Habelok took part in the game.
The game was being held at a moderate pace. Challenges for the ball were most frequent in midfield, and it virtually never got dangerous. The charges of Oleksandr Petrakov tried their luck a few times through long balls. Senegal tried to respond now and then, though they bumped into the Ukrainian defence. The first-half statistics is revealing. During the 45 minutes, the sides had zero shots on target.
Early in the second half, Ukraine was about to open the scoring. Besedin crossed it into the box with Kovalenko getting on the end of it from the edge of the goal area, but the goalkeeper kicked off the ball while falling down. On 70 minutes, the Blue-Yellow team launched a counterattack, which resulted in Besedin scoring a goal from tight angle. It took Senegal 13 minutes to equalise. Sarr took advantage of our team’s central defence mistake and sent a powerful shot just under the bar to make it 1-1. The opponents failed to define the stronger side in normal time.
In extra time, Senegal had an excellent chance to take the lead. Vaji delivered it into the box, with Niang making a close-range attempt to fly just above the bar. Ukraine responded almost immediately. Kovalenko found himself within the shooting range, but Xi pulled the ball from the corner. The additional 30 minutes were not enough for the teams to decide the winner. In the penalty shoot-out Senegal proved stronger owing to their goalkeeper’s individual brilliance, who parried away three shots.
