Introducing the opponents: Neftchi (Baku)
On June 27, as part of the Austrian training camp, Shakhtar will play a friendly match against Neftchi of Baku. Let’s take a closer look at the Pitmen’s opponents.
The club was founded in 1937 and was called Neftyanik. Already in 1949, the Baku team debuted in the USSR top flight. However, it was not easy for them to compete at the top level back then: the team got knocked out of the top division and returned there again time and again.
The heyday of Neftchi came together with the declaration of independence of Azerbaijan. In their home country, the Black-and-Whites are considered one of the strongest football teams. The Trophy cabinet of Baku-based side is precious. Eight times they claimed the domestic league title and seven times they lifted the Cup. Besides, Neftchi are the first Azerbaijani team to have advanced to the UEFA Europa League group stage. It happened back in 2012.
The leaders of Neftchi are midfielders Flavinho and Eric Ramos, along with the forward Elsan Abdullayev.
The club plays its home games at the Republican stadium named after Tofig Bahramov. The capacity of the arena is 31 thousand.
The head coach is Arif Asadov. He has been in charge of Neftchi since 2014. Earlier, this specialist led the youth team of Azerbaijan.
An interesting fact: The head of the Black-and-Whites’ Supervisory Board is a well-known Azerbaijani writer Chingiz Abdullayev.
