The Brazilians managed to convert their chance in the first fifteen minutes of the match, when Robinho converted a Dani Alves cross from the right flank. When Brazil were 1-0 up, Shakhtar’s midfielder Douglas Costa took to the pitch to play thirty minutes. Fred remained on the subs’ bench.
On 72 minutes, the scoreline was levelled: Thiago Silva handballed inside the penalty area, and Derlis Gonsales confidently converted a penalty-kick to make it 1-1. It was the penalty shoot-out, where the teams decided the fate of the match-up. Paraguay proved to be stronger in the competition of skills and nerves to progress to the competition semifinal.
