Four Shakhtar players were fielded in the starting line-up. Andriy Pyatov was stationed in goal, Yaroslav Rakytskyy was deployed at centre back, Vyacheslav Shevchuk operated at left back, and Taras Stepanenko played as a holding midfielder.
As expected, Slovenia tried to score an early goal. On 8 minutes, Kampl made a low cross into Ukraine’s penalty area for Novakovic, but Pyatov managed to cover the ball. In the next episode, the Pitmen’s goalkeeper parried away a header from the opposition player, but Cesar seized on the rebound. Slovenia opened the scoring. Then, the game saw a lot of individual battles and emotions, but there were few goal scoring opportunities.
Ukraine started the second half energetically. On 49 minutes, Yevhen Konoplyanka took a dangerous shot from 22 metres – Handanovic managed to make a save. Midway through the half, Slovenia’s goalkeeper again produced a save – this time he stopped a Shevchuk effort from outside the penalty area. On 73 minutes, Rakytskyy tried to slot in a pass from Konoplyanka, but the ball whistled over the crossbar.
Slovenia also had a chance. After a cross from a corner, Cesar headed the ball goalwards almost from point-blank range, but our goalkeeper turned the ball away for a corner. In the end of the game, the hosts tried to attack in numbers but it was Ukraine who managed to score a goal: Yarmolenko finished off a counterattack 3 vs 1.
