Before the match
Shakhtar had a chance to continue competing, but it required defeating Real Madrid, who had been two points ahead of the Pitmen.
The visitors adapted quicker to slippery field (the day before it was snowing in Morshyn), and as early as in the 9th minute they opened the scoring. After an attack down the middle of the pitch, Shakhtar’s goalkeeper Mykyta Romanov rescued the team by palming away a close-range attempt, though no one prevented Cedres from netting the rebound to make it 0-1. Giorgi Arabidze was the most active player among the Pitmen. Two of his strikes went just wide, and on 23 minutes the Donetsk team equalised. Real Madrid keeper produced an unsuccessful goal kick, which was intercepted, with Andriy Boryachuk bringing Oleksandr Zubkov through to the scoring position, who struck just below the goalkeeper to make it 1-1.
However, three minutes later Madrid again forced Romanov to make an error. The ball was throuwn in to Lazo, who scooped the ball in the box to send it right into the far left corner to make it 1-2. The Pitmen did not stop their attempts to reduce the deficit, with Olekandr Pikhalyonok being brought down in the penalty area, but the Georgian referee did not register any violation of the rules. Before the break, the opponents alternately launched attacks. The most memorable is a powerful long-ranger by Arabidze, which was hardly cleared by the Madrid keeper.
At the start of the second half, the opponents continued to exchange dangerous shots. The Pitmen operated in a more assertive and dangerous manner, still conceding another one in the 59th minute: following a right-hand cross, Mayoral sent a rebound into the back of the net to make it 1-3. This fact notwithstanding, the charges of Serhiy Kovalyov did not lose heart and tried to change the situation on the field. On 73 minutes, Arabidze brought Boryachuk through on target, who skillfully tipped the ball over the keeper from the goal area corner to make it 2-3. Immediately afterwards, Boryachuk could have levelled the scores, with the latter failing to beat the goalkeeper. While the counterattack orchestrated by Real Madrid, on the contrary, proved effective, when Sedres beat Romanov from close range to make it 2-4.
Two minutes later, Cedres grabbed a hat-trick after getting on end of a left-hand cross. On 86 minutes, Mayoral claimed a brace after receiving the ball in the box. The 2-6 defeat at the hands of Real Madrid means that Shakhtar lost every chance of reaching the UEFA Youth League knockout stage. With four points under the belt, Donetsk have finished it bottom of the group table, with another away match left against their PSG counterparts, being scheduled for December 8.
