Before match

Before this game, the opponents showed opposite results in their domestic leagues: Shakhtar thrashed Volyn 4-0 in Zaporizhzhya, and Real Madrid suffered a 4-0 home defeat at the hands of Barcelona. The teams had squad problems going into the Champions League game. Darijo Srna and Oleksandr Kucher missed the game for Shakhtar due to suspensions, Vasyl Kobin and Ivan Ordets replaced them, and Alex Teixeira captained the squad. Sergio Ramos and Marcelo were involved for Real Madrid due to injuries, goalkeeper Navas, as well as Kroos and Benzema, who played versus Shakhtar in Madrid, were left on the bench.

First half

Real Madrid started the game energetically, and as early as on 2 minutes, Ronaldo struck goalwards from the penalty spot area – just over the crossbar. The visitors dominated the ball for long spells and on 18 minutes they forced Shakhtar’s defence to commit an error. Sloppy play by Yaroslav Rakytskyy and Andriy Pyatov, who rushed out of goal, led to the ball fly towards unguarded net for Ronaldo to head the ball virtually from the goal line to make it 0-1. After thirty minutes, Ronaldo was again in the spotlight to head the ball goalwards from close range – straight into Pyatov’s hands. After that the Pitmen made the game more even, organized a few quick attacking moves, but shots did not come. The first half ended with the visitors enjoying a narrow lead.

Second half

On 50 minutes, the Madrid team scored their second goal. Ronaldo received a long ball, turned inside the penalty area before making a pass to an onrushing Modric, who made it 0-2. Straight after that episode, Pyatov saved a Ronaldo shot from close range, and in the next attacking move right back Carvajal curled the ball into the far top corner to make it 0-3. After a few minutes, Oleksandr Gladkyy could have scored, but he saw his headed shot fly wide of the mark following a good cross from Azevedo. After that, the game slowed down a little, the Pitmen started dominating the ball more, with the Madrid side springing counterattacks. On 70 minutes, Bale made a run down the left flank before drilling a cross to Ronaldo from inside the penalty area, before the latter made it 0-4 at the second attempt. Substitutions from Mircea Lucescu made the Pitmen’s attacking play brighter. On 77 minutes, Taison won a penalty kick, and Teixeira converted a spot kick to make it 1-4. It was Real Madrid’s first goal conceded in the current edition of the Champions League. The second goal followed as Dentinho, who came on as a sub, sent the ball into the net at the far post following a corner kick.

Shakhtar did not stop. On 88 minutes, Teixeira picked up the ball inside the penalty area, before firing a low shot into the corner of the net – 3-4! The Pitmen had no time for more, the Madrid managed to cope with the Pitmen’s attack at the end of the game.

Shakhtar will complete their group stage campaign in Paris against PSG on 8 December, another game will take place in Madrid, where Malmo will face Real Madrid.
