Shakhtar vs Real Madrid: players’ views
The Pitmen have reflected on the game with the Spanish team.
Alex Teixeira, Shakhtar’s midfielder:
- The first half was not very good, but the beginning of the second half was a disaster. However, in the end of the game we improved. We must always know what we want, and move towards a victory. Just like in Madrid, the first goal was the result of our loss of concentration. We played against strong players, and if you fail to cope with them, they break forward and score. But this is football and anything can happen: regardless of the result, you can get a draw or win. So I'm very happy for our team, for the last twenty minutes during which we have acted on the field! Of course, after two-three goals, the Madrid team became nervous and Shakhtar had to go forward. We were nearly there. I'm glad I have managed to score twice against such team as Real Madrid. However, the whole team are disappointed to have lost. Now we need to be totally focused on the match against PSG.
Dentinho, Shakhtar’s midfielder:
- We wanted to win this match. But we pulled ourselves together only after conceding the fourth goal. We pulled three goals back, but did not achieve the desired result – taking points in the match. However, I am pleased that we managed to regroup during the game because Real Madrid are very skilful team with strong players. Today we have had injuries, but this should not be allowed in such matches. Hence the result... Now our team are focused on progressing to the Europa League. It is necessary to come to Paris and play a match against PSG at a good level, then we will be guaranteed third place.
Taras Stepanenko, Shakhtar’s midfielder:
- Real Madrid are Real Madrid. It is clear that after El Classico the opponents had some problems, but it's still a world-class team - and everyone saw it today. When we were 1-0 down, we talked in the dressing room about the need to try to score at home. But, unfortunately, we conceded four goals... Of course, it is hard to do something after that! But we managed to bounce back mentally to score three goals. Plus Real Madrid lost concentration a little. Still, if we had had five minutes more, we could have netted fourth goal. Naturally, there were no such experienced players as Srna and Kucher. However, I do not think that the guys, who replaced them today, looked poor. Vasyl Kobin looked good against Real Madrid, he coped with the psychological pressure. Similarly, Ivan Ordets is a young guy, who has to grow. Although today we made a lot of mistakes. Our challenge now is to take third place in the group and fight for the image of the club. Therefore it is necessary to go to Paris to give our all to achieve a positive result. I'd like to take points and show good football precisely against such a world class team.
