Shakhtar on international duty: preview

Ahead of the matches involving the national teams, we bring you a traditional preview of international games that may feature Shakhtar’s players.

Ukrainians are wrapping up their qualification phase with an away fixture in Macedonia and a home tie with Spain. Mykhaio Fomenko’s charges need to take maximum points to increase their chances of directly advancing to the European Championship. Six Pitmen will help our national team in those games: goalkeeper Andriy Pyatov, defenders Oleksandr Kucher, Yaroslav Rakytskyy and Vyacheslav Shevchuk, as well as Maksym Malyshev and Taras Stepanenko.

Darijo Srna will also be away on international duty with Croatia. After Nico Kovac’s resignation, 62-year-old Ante Cacic took over at the Croatia national team. The team have to beat Bulgaria to have a good chance to get to the European Championship: in the final round Croatia will face Malta, while first and second placed Italy and Norway will face each other.
