Rinat Akhmetov: 19 years at the helm of Shakhtar

October 11 is a special day for the Donetsk club. Exactly 19 years ago, Rinat Akhmetov took charge of Shakhtar. From that moment, a new era in the history of the Pitmen has begun – a period of great victories and achievements.

Under the leadership of Rinat Akhmetov, Shakhtar have won nine Ukrainian league titles, eight domestic Cups and seven Ukrainian Super Cup trophies. And in 2009, the Pitmen enjoyed their most spectacular success in the European arena, winning the UEFA Cup. In total, the Pitmen’s have won 25 trophies over this period!

The period Rinat Akhmetov’s presidency has also witnessed the most difficult moment in the history of Shakhtar. The team have been forced to play matches away from home for a year and a half now. However, in the 2015-16 season, the Pitmen have reached the group stage of the Champions League for the 11th time.

But all achievements have faded against a background of the war in Donbas, tears, and human misery. To provide maximum help to his fellow citizens, civilians of Donetsk and Luhansk regions, who have been affected by the hostilities, Shakhtar’s president set up a humanitarian centre “Aid+Help”. The logistics centre is located at Donbass Arena. So the Pitmen’s home venue has become an Arena of Mercy. Six years of the Centre operation have seen 4.8 million food kits distributed. Behind these figures, tens of thousands of lives saved...

Peace always comes after a war. The team will return to Donetsk, and the Champions League anthem will again been heard at Donbass Arena. Therefore, the dearest wish of Shakhtar’s president will come true.
