Mykhailo Fomenko fielded five Shakhtar players in the starting line-up: Andriy Pyatov, Oleksandr Kucher, Yaroslav Rakytskyy, Vyacheslav Shevchuk and Taras Stepanenko.
Both teams started the game energetically, it was Spain who opened the scoring: on 22 minutes, Mario Gaspar headed the ball into the net. After a minute, another dangerous episode inside Ukraine’s penalty area led to a penalty kick: Kucher fouled on Fabregas, receiving the yellow card. The Pitmen’s defender will be suspended for the next match… However, one of the heroes of this match-up was Andriy Pyatov: the Pitmen’s goalkeeper coolly saved a penalty kick from Fabregas. The following five minutes saw Ukraine dominating proceedings, but Mykhailo Fomenko’s charges failed to convert chances. The closing stages of the first half saw an end to end game.
Still, that was how the opponents started the second half too. Andriy Pyatov played confidently, saving shots on a number of occasions. But he was helpless when San Jose scored Spain’s second goal. Fortunately, the referee signaled for an attacking foul. Late on, Taras Stepanenko got a yellow card for a rough foul in the opposition half of the pitch; he will also miss the next game. Ukraine were piling on pressure but it did not bear fruit.
Ukraine national team finish third in the group to reach the play off stages of the Euro 2016.
