Before the match
The game between the leaders of the youth championship took place at the Dynamo training base. The following senior team players were fielded in the starting line-up of the Pitmen: goalkeeper Bohdan Sarnavskyy, centre backs Ivan Ordets and Mykola Matvienko, forward Serhiy Gryn. Also, 17-year-old Georgian midfielder Giorgi Arabidze, who had recently been submitted by the Donetsk club for the Ukrianian league, made his debut for Shakhtar.
In the opening stages of the game, the hosts dominated ball possession more often, but circa 10 minutes the Pitmen took the initiative, creating two great chances. First, Andriy Boryachuk failed to lob the goalkeeper, and then Boryachuk put Gryn through on goal but the latter failed to hit the target after trying to dribble past the keeper. Soon Arabidze fired a shot from the edge of the penalty area but his effort was blocked by the opposition defender. Midway through the first half, the Kyiv side made the game more even.
The Pitmen’s attacking moves did not work out, and Dynamo kept applying pressure. On the stroke of the first half, one of the hosts’ attacks led to a goal: following a cross from the left Myakushko slotted the ball home at the far post from close range. Soon Andriyevkiy hit the goal post from outside the penalty area. The first half ended 1-0 to Dynamo.
During the half time break, the Pitmen’s head coach Miguel Cardoso made a substation, fielding Serhiy Gorbunov in place of Arabidze. Artem Gabelok also appeared on the pitch soon, but the Pitmen were still failing to orchestrate their attacks. At the same time, Dynamo kept on troubling Sarnavskiy. On 70 minutes, Gorbunov skipped past the defender before firing a shot towards the far corner of the net – the goalkeeper made a save. In the following attack, Oleksandr Zubkov performed the same manoeuvre on the right, but the opposition keeper again produced a save.
These actions forced the Pitmen to become more energetic. A long range from Zubkov towards the roof of the net was parried away by the goalkeeper, who also saved a Boryachuk headed shot towards the top corner. However, the hosts managed to deal with pressure. In the closing stages of the match, Dynamo managed to seize on the Pitmen’s error in the middle of the pitch. Yaremchuk advanced to the penalty before planting a low shot into the corner of the net to make it 2-0.
This defeat is the Pitmen’s first loss in the current season. Shakhtar are still topping the table, but Dynamo narrowed the gap to three points. Miguel Cardoso’s charges will play their next game on 29 October away at Zorya.
Miguel Cardoso, Shakhtar U21 head coach:
- In the first half, the team did not show our typical football. We had problems in the middle of the pitch, where Dynamo deploy three holding midfielders. In some episodes, the opponents controlled the game, created chances, operated more aggressively. We will analyse that. Unfortunately, we conceded a goal on the stroke of the first half, and before that we failed to convert, largely, our only chance, when Gryn bore down on goal. We made changes during the half time break, and the team displayed football that we embrace; we became more dynamic, out substitutions stepped up our game. But it was still tough. Dynamo were taking advantage of time, and we shipped second goal as a result of our own error.
