Malmo vs Shakhtar: preview

The Champions League matchday 3 will see the Pitmen play an away game against Malmo. We bring you the preview of the game.

21 October, Malmo, Malmo New Stadium, 21:45
Live broadcast on Ukraina and Futbol 2 channels

Malmo are the reigning champions of Sweden. Given that the domestic competition in this country is held based on the system “spring – autumn”, soon the Pitmen’s opponents will lose the title. In the current season, 28 rounds are already behind: the Swedish team are lying fifth place and nine points behind two leaders Norrköping and AIK. However, they have a chance to climb to the place above and overtake Elfsborg.

In the final round of the Swedish league, Malmo beat Kalmar 3-0 (Marcus Rosenberg’s brace and Bergeta’s goal). We remind you that Shakhtar got the same result in the game with Dynamo Kyiv (goal from Marlos and two goals from Alex Teixeira).

Before match

After two rounds, Real Madrid and PSG are topping the Group A. Shakhtar and Malmo have not claimed points yet.

The hosts left defender Josimar Jotun will miss the game in Sweden after receiving the red card in the Matchday 2 game against Real Madrid. Felipe Carvalho is likely to miss the game too, after picking up a knock in the league game with Kalmar. It has been previously reported about Molin’s injury.

Vyacheslav Shevchuk, Maksym Malyshev and Taison did not travel to Sweden with Shakhtar. Shakhtar no players suspended. Taras Stepanenko, who missed the PSG game, is ready to help the team.

Head-to-head record

Shakhtar have not faced the opponents from Sweden in the official matches. But about three years ago, in the 2012-13 season, the Pitmen beat Nordsjælland 5-2. The match took place in Copenhagen. It should be noted that Malmo and the Denmark capital are connected by Oresund Bridge, which the Pitmen saw during excursion of the city.

Interesting facts:

- for Mircea Lucescu the match with Malmo will be the 100th in the Champions League (group stage games and knockout phase matches, excluding qualification rounds);

- Malmo will play their second home Champions League game in the Champions League;

- the hosts’ captain Marcus Rosenberg faced Shakhtar in 2009 in the UEFA Cup as part of Werder Bremen.
