The Pitmen’s head coach Mircea Lucescu fielded the same squad for Malmo as five days ago against Dynamo in the league clash, which saw the Pitmen claim an away 3-0 win.
The teams’ tactics were clear from the very start of the game: Shakhtar tried to attack using width, and Malmo played defensive football, relying on counterattacks. On 17 minutes, the Pitmen found themselves in a diffiuclt situation, when the hosts opened the scoring. Konate made a run down the left flank before delivering a cross to the penalty area for Rosenberg to make it 1-0.
Nevertheless, the Pitmen kept attacking. Shakhtar totally dominated proceedings, won three times more corner kicks, but there were few scoring opportunities. Midway through first half, Oleksandr Gladkyy failed to find the target following a cross from the right, and then Fred failed to hit the far corner of the net from outside the penalty area. But in the closing stages of the half, Malmo came close to extending their lead, but Pyatov managed to save a Berget shot from point blank range. The first half finished with the hosts enjoying a narrow lead.
After the break Malmo failed to seize on another chance, when Berget fired goal wards after being left unmarked. On 55 minutes, a physical battle between Darijo Srna and Berget inside the penalty area was considered by the referee as the infringement of rules by Shakhtar’s player. Pyatov made a brilliant save, parrying away a Jurjic shot from a penalty spot. Soon, Bengtsson came close to getting on the end of the cross to the far post from the left wing.
The hosts kept attacking, and the Pitmen were not succeeding in counterattacks. Bernard had a decent chance, but his shot was saved by the opposition goalkeeper. Pyatov went on to make two fine saves. Mircea Lucescu tried to change the situation on the pitch, fielding Eduardo in place of Marlos. In the final 15 minutes, the Pitmen dominated proceedings. Alex Teixeira’s goal after an Eduardo flick-on was ruled out, after being singalled for offside.
On 87 minutes, following a cross from Srna, Taras Stepanenko could have leveled the score, but the ball went wide. Viktor Kovalenko, who came on as a sub, also wasted his opportunity. As a result, the Pitmen have lost all their games in the group so far, with Malmo climbing to third place with three points under the belt. Shakhtar will play their next Champions League game on 3 November at home in Lviv against the Swedish club.
