U21. Zorya vs Shakhtar: match preview

On Thursday, in the 13th round of the U21 Ukrainian League, the Pitmen will play Zorya Luhansk away. We bring you the match preview below.

The 13th round match programme will start with the game involving two sides from the top four: Zorya will entertain in Kremenchuh Shakhtar team, who continue to occupy the top spot in the league with 28 points after 11 matches. The Luhansk side played one game less, being six points adrift of the Pitmen. It should be noted that Luhansk’s current winning streak includes four consecutive games. In the previous round, the team of Miguel Cardoso suffered a 0-2 defeat at the hands of their closest chasers Dynamo, thus letting the Kyiv side to be just one victory away.

Shakhtar forward Andriy Boryachuk continues to lead the U21 league top scorers race, boasting 14 goals in 11 games. Denys Balanyuk of Dnipro notched two goals less. On October 27, in the return leg of the Ukrainian Cup Last 16 game against Ternopil, Boryachuk came off the bench and scored a goal. This is the second goal by the young striker for the senior team – earlier, he scored in the first away game against the same Ternopil.

On Tuesday, together with Boryachuk, other members of the U21 team took to the pitch: Oleksandr Zubkov and Andriy Korobenko, as well as the 17-year-old Giorgi Arabidze, who two weeks ago made his debut firstly for Shakhtar reserve team and then in the UEFA Youth League, and finally he debuted for the first team. For today, there have been no suspended players in Shakhtar U21 team. As for Zorya, the defender Oleksandr Sukharov will miss the game against the Pitmen.


In the 2012/13 season, Zorya reserve team were the champions of Ukraine. Last season, they finished in the seventh spot, exchanging home wins with Shakhtar in the head-to-head meetings. In Poltava, at the stadium of  Lokomotiv, the team of Miguel Cardoso managed to score the decider in the closing stages of the game to make it 2-1. In the second half of the season, Zorya – being reinforced by a few first-team players, won with the same score.
