DUFL: control and pressing
On Matchday 8 of the DUFL, 28 October, the Pitmen U14 and U16 faced Dynamo Kyiv.
In the match involving younger teams, as expected, the players were challenging for the ball in each area of the pitch. Shakhtar managed to win more individual battles and play the ball forward. In one of such attacks, Dynamo’s defender brought Artyom Umanets near the penalty area. And Bohdan Potalov sent the ball expertly into the far corner of the net from a set play to put the Pitmen in front. Before the break, Dynamo managed to level, but Mykyta Turbayevskiy played confidently in goal. In the second half the visitors looked even more energetic in attack, but the Pitmen’s defence confidently coped with their work, and the opponents’ only dangerous headed shot was parried away by Turbaevskiy.
Shakhtar U14 head coach Andriy Zabolotnyi has reflected on the game:
- The teams’ special attitude was clear. Everyone understood how important this game was. We are very pleased with our boys’ commitment: they showed character, pressed Dynamo well. Everyone followed the instructions, especially in the first half. After the break, we committed some errors, maybe, fatigue took its toll. Overall, it was a good match, but there is room for improvement.

In the older group the Pitmen took control of the game from the opening minutes. Gennadiy Zubov’s charges controlled the ball and attacked sharper. Maksym Maksimenko could have opened the scoring but sent the ball straight into the goalkeeper’s hands from a good position. Pavlo Koryakin took a good long shot, but Dynamo’s goalkeeper again made a save. Vladislav Chymryov and Artyom Nazarenko failed to seize on their chances too. The crucial episode came when Koryakin committed a foul inside his own penalty area. The visitors converted a spot kick. The Pitmen tried to get back into the game, but Dynamo played confidently in defence, and a little later they cemented their lead with second goal against the Pitmen.
- Today we had two different halves, - Shakhtar U16 head coach Gennadiy Zubov has reflected on the game. – In the opening 40 minutes, we played in a disciplined manner, we looked better than opponents, but, sadly, failed to convert our chances. We completely failed the second half, made errors in defence, conceded a penalty kick. Our transitions from defence to attack were poor. We tried to make situation dangerous upfront through long balls, but the boys poorly picked positions to receive passes. We will analyse errors and move on.
