The attacking football with three forwards of the Bergamo predetermined the nature of the game: the ball did not remain for long in the middle of the pitch. It was an end-to-end match. As early as on 5 minutes, Alex Teixeira had a good chance to score, after Eduardo found him inside the penalty area thanks to a long ball. A shot by the Pitmen’s captain went just wide of the target. Atalanta responded with two dangerous attacks, during one of which Serhiy Kryvtsov cleared the ball off the goal line.
On 13 minutes, Teixeira cut inside during a fast attacking move before taking a low shot towards the corner of the net – the opposition goalkeeper made a save. Midway through the first half, Bernard earned a dangerous free kick. The latter took a good shot over the wall towards the top corner – Atalanta’s goalkeeper made a save. Eduardo made a pass to Bernard following a 3 vs 2 counterattack, but a shot from close range by the Pitmen’s No 10 was blocked by the opposition defender. The closing stages of the first half saw the hosts slow down, with Anton Kanibolotskiy making two saves, with one of the shots from close distance blocked by Kryvtsov. The first half ended 0-0.
As soon the second half started, Shakhtar opened the scoring. Bernard put Teixeira through on goal, before the latter advanced to the opposition penalty area to make it 1-0. The game defined the Pitmen’s dominance, with Atalanta, who made a number of changes, finding their rhythm only on 70 minutes. There were dangerous long range shots, set pieces and crosses from Atalanta. The Pitmen’s defence had to work hard.
On 79 minutes, Mircea Lucescu fielded Shakhtar U21 forward Oleksandr Zubkov and soon during a fast counterattack Taison made a pass to him in front of goal. Zubkov beat the goalkeeper but the angle was tight, so the forward passed the ball to Teixeira, whose shot was saved by the hosts’ goalkeeper. Later other Shakhtar U21 players took to the pitch: Andriy Boryachuk and Danylo Sagutkin, as well as Wellington Nem. Dentinho got the captain’s armband. In the stoppage time, the hosts had a chance to level but the ball flew over the crossbar.
Shakhtar beat Atalanta 1-0 and received a symbolic Cup from organisers during a bright rewarding ceremony. Straight after the game, the team will head to Kyiv to prepare the preparation for the Matchday 7 game against Metalist, which will take place on 11 September.
