Shakhtar’s internationals: Croatia lost to Norway
On 6 September, Oslo hosted the Euro 2016 matchday 8 qualifier in the Group H.
Norway 2-0 Croatia
Goals: 1:0 Berget (51), 2:0 Corluka (69, own goal)
Croatia: Subasic, Vrsaljko, Corluka, Srna, Vida, Rakitic (Kalinic, 73), Modric, Brozovic, Perisic, Piazza (Olic, 64), Mandzukic
Darijo Srna was fielded in the starting line-up for the Croatia national team. The Pitmen’s captain played the full match.
The first half saw an evenly matched game. The hosts created the most dangerous chance on 29 minutes. Forren picked up the ball after a cross from a free kick at the corner of the penalty area, but Daniel Subasic parried away a point blank range. Croatia also responded with a dangerous set piece: before the half time Corluka flicked the ball on to Mandzukic in the opposition penalty area, but Norway’s goalkeeper parried away a headed shot from Mario.
In the opening stages of the second half, Mandzukic twice threatened the opposition goal after trademark passes from Srna. Straight after that Norway opened the scoring. After a cross from a free kick, the ball bounced to Berget, who skipped past Srna to fire the ball into the near corner of the net from close range.
Croatia rushed forward looking for equaliser, and as it often happens, were hit on the break. After a shot from Berget and a deflection off Corluka the ball flew into the net for second time. The victory allowed Norway to claim 16 points. Italy and Croatia are one point behind but the Italians have one game in hand.
