U19. Real Madrid vs Shakhtar: players’ view

The Pitmen have reflected on the match against Real Madrid.

Ilya Putrya, Shakhtar U19 midfielder:

- It is difficult to explain such a scoreline... Maybe some of us were too nervous, some players made their debuts - me, for example. Yes, the nervousness was there, but all of that disappeared as soon as we took to the pitch. We seemed to play well, had opportunities to score, but our mistakes in defence led to us conceding four goals. It is difficult now to analyse the match. If we had scored at least couple of chances... We were not lucky, hopefully we will be luckier in the following games. I think we have what it takes to beat Real Madrid at home, this team consists of guys who are like us. Moreover, we have a number of games to play ahead of the Real Madrid clash. Of course, it would have been easier, if we had played the first leg at home. In the dressing room coach supported us and said not to worry. Although, of course, everyone is very upset: a bitter defeat. We will still work!

Andriy Korobenko, Shakhtar U19 midfielder:

- Real Madrid are a very good team with excellent players. If we had converted our chances in the first half, perhaps, the match would have been quite different, but Real Madrid goalkeeper played well. We were gearing up for a fight. After the first goal, we encouraged each other, saying that we can play with these opponents. We tried to control the ball, and not just hit it upfield: it turned out this way, but the result is disappointing. In the second match with Real Madrid, we will make every effort to prove that the current scoreline is unfair.
