Oleksandr Zubkov was stationed at right side of midfield; he made his debut for the senior team. Eduardo was captaining the squad.
Straight from the start the Pitmen took the game to the opponents’ half, the hosts were defending in numbers. The first chance created by Shakhtar arrived through Zubkov, who fired a shot from distance, with the goalkeeper doing his best to turn the ball away for a corner. After taking it, Zubkov had a chance to score but his shot was stopped by the goalkeeper. Gradually, the hosts adapted, reached Shakhtar’s penalty area on a number of occasions. On 28 minutes, Zubkov flicked the ball on to Dentinho – just wide of the post.
Soon Zubkov was again in the spotlight, when he failed to lob the goalkeeper who had rushed out of goal following a corner kick. On 34 minutes, the scoring was opened: Ismaily made a run down the left side before feeding Maksym Malyshev inside the penalty area; the latter fired an unstoppable shot into the roof of the net to make it 0-1. The first half finished with the Pitmen enjoying a narrow lead.
As soon as the game resumed, the Pitmen extended the lead. After a mix-up inside the hosts’ penalty area, Eduardo fed Bernard, who expertly rolled the ball into the near corner of the net – 0-2. After eight minutes, Bernard could have sealed his brace, but failed to beat the goalkeeper when bearing down on goal. But on 60 minutes, the Brazilian managed to score after scoring a beautiful free kick: he curled the ball over the wall and into the top corner of the net – 0-3.
After that, Mircea Lucescu fielded Shakhtar U21 players: Andriy Boryachuk and Andriy Korobenko, who made their debuts for the senior team. The Pitmen had enough chances to extend the lead, with Ismaily hitting the goal post after one of the attacking moves. On 76 minutes, Viktor Kovalenko fed Boryachuk, who hit the corner of the net from close range. After a minute, Bernard delivered a cross to onrushing Kovalenko to make it 0-5.
Bernard could have sealed his hat trick but his free kick was saved by the goalkeeper, and in the closing stages of the game the Brazilian failed to score from a good position. As for Sarnavskyi, the Pitmen’s goalkeeper made two saves in the game, stopping long range effort from dead ball situations.
