Ternopil vs Shakhtar: players’ view
Players of the Donetsk team have reflected on the first match of the Ukrainian Сup last-16.
Bernard, Shakhtar’s midfielder:
- I’m very happy that today I sealed a brace and helped my team win! I would like to thank Mister a lot for his patience! We see that the head coach trusts us, and we try not to let him down. With each match, I want to show a better performance - I hope I succeed. Commitment is very important, the understanding of what the coach wants from you - this is a guarantee of success. I am working very hard. As for the Cup game, it was very nice how we were received in Ternopil. The arrival of Shakhtar has become a holiday for Ternopil: the stadium was full, and the audience applauded after the game to all players, despite the fact that the local team lost. That is the European standard of football: I would like to thank the opponents for the game, regardless of the outcome.
Viktor Kovalenko, Shakhtar’s midfielder:
- I have scored the long awaited debut goal for Shakhtar; I am very happy! By the way, before the match Ivan Ordets and Vasyl Kobin said that I would score today – they turned out to be right. I also had such a feeling - the truth is that I have that feeling before each match. (Laughs.) This goal was the result of combinations we practise during training sessions. And I must give credit to Bernard, who noticed me and made a pass. Even though the scoreline is so overwhelming, I would say that Ternopil are a good team: the guys fought to the last! But they were not rough; this is an important moment.
Maksym Malyshev, Shakhtar’s midfielder:
- Mister asked us to take this game seriously. All turned out well: we won, scored a lot of goals. Even despite a big result, we did not stop; we continued to attack, because we wanted to solve everything in the first meeting. Of course, I am very pleased that my goal helped the team win, but my actions will be assessed by Mister. Now we focus on the Ukrainian league and the Champions League. And only then we will think about the return match with Ternopil.
Oleksandr Zubkov, Shakhtar’s midfielder:
- To be honest, I was very nervous when I heard that I would be fielded in the starting eleven. But all the guys from the team supported me, made me feel confident. I would like to thank my team-mates at the club, they helped me psychologically gear up for the match. After the starting whistle, the nervousness instantly disappeared completely, I was totally focused on the match. I believe there were not problems with teamwork. We have the whole team working in the same direction, everyone knows what is required of them, so our understating of each other is decent. Despite a big advantage in terms of the scoreline, not everything worked out in the attack; we repeatedly lost the ball when we could avoid it. The main thing is that we have won. After the match, Mister congratulated us on a good result.
