The Pitmen’s starting line-up was virtually optimal ahead of the PSG clash. Andriy Pyatov was stationed in goal. Yaroslav Rakytskyy and Ivan Ordets were deployed as central defenders, with Ismaily operating on the left.
Shakhtar went forward in numbers; dangerous shots were taken by Alex Teixeira and Darijo Srna. But soon the game became more evenly matched, Olimpik’s counterattacks became more dangerous. On 16 minutes, after a corner kick, the ball hit Ordets’ hand, which led to the referee awarding a penalty kick and showing our player the red card. Pyatov managed to parry away a Kadimyan shot, but the forward managed to get on the rebound first – 1-0.
Shakhtar immediately made a change: Oleksandr Kucher partnered with Rakytskyy with Oleksandr Gladkyy leaving the pitch. Teixeira was spearheading the attack. The Pitmen dominated ball possession despite being reduced to ten men, and on 37 minutes Taison was brought down inside Olimpik’s penalty area. Teixeira confidently converted a penalty kick, netting his 11th goal in the league (in 9 matches). The first half ended 1-1.
After the break, the Pitmen dominated the game, with often taking the game to the oppoents’ half. Teixeira took a headed shot – the opposition goalkeeper made a save, Taison missed the target from a good position. On 62 minutes, Mircea Lucescu fielded Taison instead Bernard, who almost bore down on goal following a pass from Marlos. Then, Shakhtar conceded second goal after a long range effort from Lysenko to make it 2-1.
On 71 minutes, Mircea Lucescu made the final substitution, fielding Viktor Kovalenko. Soon Teixeira was brought down inside the penalty area of Olimpik. Conde got the second yellow card and was sent off, with Darijo Srna converting a penalty to make it 2-2. Then, after a corner, Kucher could have scored but the goalkeeper made a save. Bernard fired goal wards from close range – over the crossbar. Taras Stepanenko’s goal was ruled out because of offside. Fred and Stepanenko also had chances to score.
But on 90 minutes, Shakhtar managed to score. Ismaily hit the crossbar following a shot from distance, Stepanenko got on the rebound before feeding Alex Teixeira who sealed his 12th goal of the season. 3-2, Shakhtar won in a very nervous encounter to claim 22 points. The Pitmen will play their next match in Lviv against PSG at the group stage of the Champions League. On 3 September, the Pitmen will face Chornomorets at the same venue.
