Before the match

This meeting took place in Morshyn. Compared to the first-round defeat at Real Madrid, the Pitmen’s mentor Serhiy Kovalyov made five replacements in the starting line-up. With the captain's armband on, once again came out the first team defender Mykola Matviyenko, while the top scorer of the Ukrainian U21 League Andriy Boryachuk was not able to play.

First half

The French team got off to a flying start, with the visitors managing to open the scoring early: Augustin forced Donetsk defence to capitulate – 0-1. The discouraged Pitmen could not rediscover their game for a long time, but the goalkeeper Mykyta Romanov worked hard between the sticks. Halfway through the first half the game levelled off. Oleksandr Pikhalionok produced a dangerous shot from outside of the box straight down the middle of the goal, with PSG goalkeeper rescuing his team. Oleksandr Zubkov’s effort hit the post, with Vladyslav Bugai missing the target from the goal area.

The ending of the first half was marked by the visitors’ busy performance. Romanov came to the rescue after being challenged one-on-one, but a minute before the break, the French side successfully played a corner with Doucoure heading the ball home. The first half ended 2-0 in favour of PSG.

Second half

At half time, the coaching staff of Shakhtar made two substitutions with focus on the offensive performance. However, on 52 minutes the ref awarded a spot kick against Shakhtar and, although Romanov guessed right the direction of Pereira’s effort, the former failed to make a save – 0-3. Immediately afterwards, Shakhtar goalkeeper rescued his team from conceding the fourth goal. The score might well be changed by Zubkov, who entered the penalty area and shot into the far corner – just wide. Meanwhile, Romanov continued rescuing the Pitmen.

And yet, Shakhtar managed to score on 73 minutes. Zubkov did it, getting on end of a Dmytro Topalov assist. The Pitmen raised the pace, trying to build on their success, but missed a counter-attack by PSG when Augustin beat Romanov and just rolled the ball home – 1-4. Toward the close of the meeting, Artur Avagimyan could score, but his effort was parried away by the French goalkeeper, with Topalov missing the target while trying to finish it off.

In injury time, another counterattack by the visitors resulted in another spot kick awarded, with Romanov guessing right Augustin’s intention this time, firmly securing the ball in the bottom corner. The Pitmen suffered their second defeat in the UEFA Youth League group stage. In the next round, they are to play Malmo away on October 21.
