Compared to the first match of the group stage against Real Madrid, there were two changes to the Pitmen’s starting line-up: Vyacheslav Shevchuk was fielded at left back, and Maksym Malyshev replaced Taras Stepanenko who was suspended.
Shakhtar started the game very energetically, earning two free kicks, but PSG first attacking move led to a goal: Aurier headed the ball in following a cross to the far post from the left flank. After ten minutes, Ibrahimovic had a chance to score with a headed shot but missed the target from close range. Soon the visiotrs doubled the lead after a corner: David Luiz sent the ball in with his knee to make it 0-2.
The Pitmen tried to change the course of the game. Marlos made a fine run into the penalty area before shooting towards the far corner of the net – just wide of the target. Soon Di Maria advanced from the centre of the pitch to bear down on goal but failed to beat Pyatov. On 36 minutes, Maksym Malyshev earned a dangerous free kick – Darijo Srna sent the ball over the wall straight into the goalkeeper’s hands. On 42 minutes, the Pitmen piled on pressure: after Teixeira’s slalom run the ball went just wide of the mark. The first half finished with the visitors being 2-0 up.
After the break the Pitmen took control of the game, and Taison fired a decent shot from outside the penalty area – the ball flew just wide of the goal post. PSG’s response was dangerous too: Yaroslav Rakytskyy blocked a Verrati shot, PSG counterattacks posed a lot of threats. On 71 minutes, Mircea Lucescu made double substitution, fielding Viktor Kovalenko and Bernard. The Pitmen managed to close down the visitors in their half of the pitch. Teixeira had two excellent chances: in the first episodes his shot from close range was blocked by the goalkeeper, and then he hit the crossbar following a pass from Oleksandr Gladkyy. Mircea Lucescu made third substitution on 85 minutes – Dentinho came on for Gladkyy.
In the final minutes the Pitmen also had goal scoring opportunities, the best of them was wasted by Teixeira, who fired wide from the corner of the penalty area. The visitors’ rare counterattack led to third goal, when Ibrahimovic raced on goal, his shot took delfection off Darijo and flew into the net.
The Pitmen will play their next Champions League group stage game away at Malmo on 21 October.
