Introducing opponents: Anderlecht
In the UEFA Europa League Round of 16, Shakhtar will take on Anderlecht. One of the oldest clubs in Belgium was founded in 1908 in Brussels.
Over its long history, the Pitmen's opponents have become the most decorated club domestically, also achieving significant progress in Europe. Anderlecht are 33-time champions of Belgium and the nine-time domestic cup winners. Back in the 70s of the last century, the Purple-Whites twice won the Cup Winners' Cup, also being the competition’s double runners-up.
Perhaps, the year 1983 was the most successful in the history of Anderlecht, with the Belgian team lifting the UEFA Cup after beating Benfica in the final. The following season, the Pitmen’s opponents also reached the finals, finally losing to Tottenham in a penalty shoot-out.
The Brussels side have finished the 2014/15 league season in the third spot, which allowed them to qualify directly for participation in the Europa League group stage. In group J, they claimed the second spot, letting Tottenham sit atop. In the Round of 32, Anderlecht defeated Olympiakos (1- 0 at home and 1-2 away).
Currently, Shakhtar’s opponents are going third in the Belgian Pro League. They are 7 and 4 points adrift of Brugge and Genk respectively. The team are coached by a 44-year-old Albanian specialist Besnik Hasi.
Let us remind you that the first leg Shakhtar vs Anderlecht takes place in Lviv on March 10.
