At the open training session, the Pitmen’s captain answered the questions from journalists
- Darijo, what is the team’s state after the Super Cup tie and what do you expect in the new season?
- For two years we haven’t won the league title, we’ve raised the Super Cup several years in a row, having lost this time. This year, we will try to meet every objective of ours. As for the match against Dynamo, we have already watched this game. Paulo Fonseca made certain conclusions. I am confident our team will grow and show good football.
- For the first time the championship will be held in line with the new format. What are your expectations?
- If we look at the situation in Ukraine, I think, it will be a good championship. There will be more meetings with Dynamo, Dnipro, Vorskla, Zorya, so the level should get higher. But our objective is to train, play and win.
- How different are training systems of Lucescu and Fonseca?
- In football, there is only one language. Some coaches work using one type of formations, while the others use some other type. Mircea Lucescu is Shakhtar’s legend. Over the 12 years, he has done a lot for our club. However, we need to learn to live without him. I wished him good luck at Zenit. I do not doubt his future good results there. We have another way. The young, ambitious, good coach, who proved himself at Braga, Porto and Pacos de Ferreira. Paulo Fonseca deserves respect, he deserves to be the coach of Shakhtar. We are glad to have got such a professional in our team.
- Darijo, you have had very short holidays. Did you manage to have some rest?
- I rested more mentally. There was a difficult period, but we have to move on. I am finishing my career in the national team. In 10 days, I will write a formal letter. I want to fully focus on my performance at Shakhtar.
- How difficult was it for you to understand the new playing pattern?
- We turned in a pretty good performance against Dynamo, given that I’ve been just one week with the team. Shakhtar should play even better. We will step it up and train. If a player wants to work, he will quickly grasp everything.
- Darijo, your friend Igor Duljaj is part of Shakhtar coaching staff from this season on. Do you perceive him as a coach?
- Of course I do! We all know how much time Igor spent at Shakhtar, how much good he has done for our club. He proved himself together with Miguel at the Academy. I am delighted at his being with us. Such professionals must work at Shakhtar.
- You are starting your league campaign with the match against Zirka. How hard is it to play the team you haven’t encountered previously?
- 95 percent of the Ukrainian League games depend on Shakhtar. With all due respect to all the teams, we have the level of players that we should make the opponents make errors. But the better side win - it has once again been proved by the Euro games. We respect all our opponents. Zirka have advanced to the Premier League, they would want to show themselves. It will be hard, but it all depends on us.
- What can you say about the Champions League qualifying round opponents?
- We all know how the games against Young Boys are important to us. We really want to make it to the Champions League main competition. I am sure we will improve from game to game. We are facing some exciting encounters.
