Before the match

The football season in Ukraine resumes with the cup ties. The Pitmen have already had two competitive games, making it past Schalke 04, Germany in the UEFA Europa League. Meanwhile, it will be the first major game for Vorskla after the winter break, during which the charges of Vasyl Sachko had had two long-lasting training camps in Turkey.

At the previous cup stages, Shakhtar knocked out of the competition Arsenal-Kyiv (3- 0), confidently beating Ternopil twice (5-0 and 4-0) in the Round of 16. In turn, Poltava defeated Chernihiv-based Desna in August (drawing 1-1 in normal time and winning a penalty shoot-out), later breaking the resistance of Odesa-based Chornomorets in a two-legged tie.

Traditionally, Shakhtar’s games against Vorskla have always featured an exciting spectacle for fans and a real battle until the final whistle for the players. This fact is confirmed by the sides’ only meeting in the current season. In the domestic league round four, Vorskla in the last minute managed to draw 2-2 through the goal by Oleksandr Kovpak.

Interestingly, in the current Cup competition, the teams do not have any pronounced scorers. Maksym Malyshev, Andriy Boryachuk and Bernard scored for Shakhtar two times each. Meanwhile, Vorskla netted just two goals in three games with Anton Shynder and Mladen Bartulović putting their names on the scoresheet.

During the winter break, midfielders Oleksiy Dovgii (previous club - Metalist) and Pavlo Rebenok (Belarusian Torpedo-BelAZ), as well as forwards Yuriy Kolomoets ( Oleksandriya) and Dmytro Khlebas (Hoverla), joined the ranks of Vorskla. The latter will play on loan in Poltava.

We want to note that Artem Hromov (suspension due to two yellow cards) and Anton Shynder will not play against Shakhtar this time.
