Introducing the opponents: Braga

In the UEFA Europa League Last 8, the Pitmen will meet with Braga, Portugal. We traditionally introduce you to the opponents.

The club was founded back in 1921. Despite its long history, the ‘Arsenal fans’, as the local fans call the team, cannot boast numerous achievements. In 2010, they became the domestic league runners-up, winning bronze in 2012. In 1996, Shakhtar’s rivals won the domestic cup, and in 2013 they won the Portuguese League Cup. In addition, Braga was playing in the Europa League final in 2011, suffering a narrow win at the hands of Porto though. In 2008, the team marked the UEFA Intertoto Cup triumph.

The ‘Arsenal fans’ finished the 2014/15 league season in the fourth spot, which allowed them to directly reach the UEFA Europa League group stage. In Group F, they ranked first, making it past Olympique Lyonnais (FRA), Slovan Liberec and Groningen. In the Round of 16, the Portuguese beat Sion 4-3 on aggregate, marking a 4-2 aggregate win over Fenerbahce.

Currently, Braga are sitting in the fourth spot with 47 points after 26 games.

In the 2010/11 season, Shakhtar twice met with Braga in the Champions League group stage. The encounter at the Donbass Arena ended in a 2-0 win for the Pitmen, with Mircea Lucescu’s charges claiming a 3-0 away win at the Portuguese side.

Since 2015, the team have been coached by Paulo Fonseca. Previously, the Portuguese expert worked with Porto and Pacos de Ferreira. The Gunners play their home games at the Estádio Municipal de Braga having a 30,000 seating capacity.

From 2012 to 2013, Shakhtar defender Ismaily played for Braga.
