Before the match

The Pitmen’s mentor Paulo Fonseca made three changes to the starting line-up compared to the match versus Chornomorets. After the disqualification due to exceeding the limit of yellow cards, Yaroslav Rakits’kyy returned to the centre defence paired with Kucher. Olexandr registered the 200th appearance in the Ukrainian Premier League in the match vs Olimpik. Viktor Kovalenko emerged from the opening minutes. Facundo Ferreyra appeared in the starting line-up for the first time in the spring part of the season.

First half

Shakhtar got on the front foot from the off and created clear-cut chances at the early stages of the match. It all started with a long-range shot from Taison who saw Olimpik goalkeeper thwarting the danger with difficilties. Facundo Ferreyra could have done the needful in the next attacking move. He connected with Bernard’s corner to send his header wide of the post. The third Pitmen’s effort over a short period of time broke the deadlock. At the 7th minute, Darijo Srna easily outclassed the defender to flick a high cross into the penalty area, where Taison beautifully sent his header into the far corner. Following an opener, the game somewhat calmed down and moved to the centre of the pitch. The Orange-and-Blacks continued to enjoy a territorial advantage, but faced with a difficulty to carve the opponents’ defence open. The Pitmen managed to double the lead on 37 minutes, due to individual skills of Marlos and Bernard. The first played a well-placed pass from the deep of the field, with the second cleverly leaving behind his marker to easily beat coming off his line Zauri Makharadze.
