In the 4th round of the Ukrainian U19 league, Shakhtar played Skala away

Before the match the coach Serhii Shyschenko faced a number of personnel issues. Defender Nazarii Muravskyi and forward Artem Kholod left to join Ukraine U17, with midfielder Maksym Andruschenko staying at home due to illness and defender Yurii Mate not being fully healthy. As a result, the defensive third of the Donetsk team turned out to be experimental: with Vladyslav Chmyrev at left back, Dmytro Pavlish and Yefym Konoplya from Shakhtar U21 at centre-back, and Kyrylo Melichenko at right back. Andrii Stryzhak, who in previous matches played as a holding midfielder, has played as a winger this time.

First half

The visitors could open the scoring already in the fourth minute: Stryzhak made a slaloming run down the left flank and fed Kryskiv – with Dmytro’s effort shattering the crossbar. In the 23rd minute Vladyslav Kuzmenko burst into the penalty area only to see the Skala keeper rescue his team. However, the corner kick led to success. Oleksii Kaschuk delivered a high ball, with Dmytro Pavlish, after jumping above the rest, headed the ball into the back of the net. The goal somewhat calmed the events down: the Orange-and-Blacks played positionally, with the opponents coping with the visitors’ attempts to score a goal. Already in the injury time, Skala fulfilled an effective attack, with Yurii Cherepuschak hitting the corner of the net from midfield – 1-1.

Second half

The nature and pattern of the game did not change, except that Shakhtar dominated possession even more. The hosts just dropped deep down their half, hoping mostly for some quick counterattacks. In the 56th minute Andrii Stryzhak could score, but he failed to beat the goalkeeper. Over time, Skala pushed the events away from their goal, with the referee starting to register violations of the rules increasingly more frequently, the pace of the match dropped. Nevertheless, the visitors' attack in the 72nd minute led to a goal by Vladyslav Kuzmenko, who sent the ball exactly into the corner after a right-hand cross. Shortly afterwards, the Donetsk team could increase the lead, but Andrii Kulakov failed to convert a spot kick – the host goalkeeper came to his team’s rescue. The end of the meeting saw attacks of the Orange-and-Blacks, with Oleksii Kaschuk hitting the crossbar in injury time, but the numbers on the scoreboard remained unchanged.

The Miners broke a series of failures in the games vs Stryi-based club after two draws last season (0-0 and 2-2), claiming a 2-1 win
In the next round on September 9, Shakhtar will entertain Vorskla Poltava.

Serhii Shyschenko, Shakhtar U19 head coach:

- We faced certain defensive problems: Konoplya and Pavlish never appeared in this combination. Moreover, they never played as central defenders. It’s true that I had some fears about it, but I'm still very glad that we finally managed to win it. The first half did not quite work, there were numerous unnecessary losses, which allowed the opponents to launch blistering counterattacks. And although we controlled the course of the game, Skala players managed to bring threat. After the break, the guys started playing better offensively, perhaps not as aggressively as I’d like them to, but still it allowed us to score the winner and create a number of promising chances.

Dmytro Pavlish, Shakhtar U19 defender:

- It was my first header goal following a corner kick. Of course I’m delighted with the goal, but the most important thing is that we won a difficult match. It’s true that had the central defender role for the first time, but this week we’ve been practising this formation, so I somewhat got used to that.
We managed to excel, we also had a number of pretty good chances, still failing to convert them and giving one away just before the half-break whistle
Vladyslav Kuzmenko, Shakhtar U19 midfielder:

- The encounter proved tough. We managed to excel, we also had a number of pretty good chances, still failing to convert them and giving one away just before the half-break whistle. In the second half we also had chances, and I converted one of them: Andrii Kulakov fed me, and I fired it into the corner with one touch.
