In the Ukrainian League round 10, the Miners played Zirka away

Shakhtar arrived in Kropivnytskyi on the match day. Bohdan Butko played at right back, with Yaroslav Rakits’kyy and Ivan Ordets operating at centre back. Viktor Kovalenko remained on the bench, with Taison appearing behind the striker.

Ferreyra’s brace

The Donetsk team created their first chance early in the second minute: Ferreyra might open the scoring, but the ball went just wide. Only the third attempt of the Argentine proved effective – Taison crossed to the far post, with Facundo literally carrying the ball into the net – 1-0. The goal did not significantly change the course of the game. In the following twenty minutes, Shakhtar created a few more chances. However, the main events occurred at the end of the first half. First, the hosts equalized. In the 38th minute, the ball hit Butko’s arm, with the referee awarding a free kick. Oleksii Chichikov crossed a high ball, with El Amdaui flicking the ball home at the far post to make it 1-1. Paulo Fonseca’s men responded to that with scoring two goals. Initially Marlos sent a Taison pass low into the back of the net, with Ferreyra heading Butko’s delivery home a minute later.

Kovalenko found a chance

After the break, the game somewhat calmed down. It started raining heavily, with the teams creating fewer chances. The hosts had a set-play chance, but Pyatov coped with Zahalskyi's attempt. Shortlly afterwards, Andriy parried away a Polehenko shot to conclude one of Zirka’s counterattacks. At the same time, Shakhtar continued to have the initiative. Paulo Fonseca fielded Viktor Kovalenko instead of Taison, with Ivan Petriak replacing Marlos a bit later. By that moment, a goal by Rassadkin revived the plot. The Miners were playing, saving strength for Tuesday’s Champions League game, having several more chances at the end of the game. Ferreyra could score twice, but the bar and the goalkeeper came to the hosts’ rescue. Still, Shakhtar finally sealed the win: Kovalenko took advantage of the error of Past, who failed to hold the slippery ball following a cross – 4-2. We also want to mention the end-of-match appearance of the Academy graduate Oleksandr Pikhalyonok as a sub player.

Shakhtar will have their next match on September 26. Paulo Fonseca’s team will play Manchester City away on the Champions League group stage matchday 2.
