Shakhtar played Mariupol in the Ukrainian Cup semi-final
Paulo Fonseca reshuffled the squad, fielding in the starting line-up the young Dodo, Mykola Matviienko and Oleksandr Zubkov. Olarenwaju Kayode appeared as an attacking spearhead, with the recovered Maksym Malyshev also featuring on the player list.
Three goals before the break
The Miners marked their edge early by opening the scoring as early as 8 minutes: Kovalenko earned a free kick some 25 metres away from goal, with Taison superbly bending it around the wall to hit the near corner – 1-0. The visitors could not respond with anything for a long while, but the Donetsk team themselves helped the Mariupol outfit midway through the first half: confusion in the penalty area resulted in the ball being intercepted by Dedechko and sent home by Tischenko. The Orange-and-Blacks responded with a series of threatening attacks. Zubkov tried to curl a left-footer towards the far post only to see Galchuk palming it for a corner. In the 34th minute, the hosts made a forced substitution: the injured Dentinho was replaced by Marlos securing a goal and an assist before the break. Matviienko received the ball from Zubkov on the left wing, made it past Belyi and rolled it towards the far post, where Marlos hit the back of the by-then unguarded goal – 2-1. In the injury time, Taison orchestrated a smart move with his teammates. At the edge of the box, the captain alternately played one-two with Zubkov and Marlos, flicking the latter’s assist home just near the right post – 3-1.
Malyshev returned, Kayode scored again
The second half was also fully dominated by Shakhtar. Early in the second half, the newcomers were particularly active: Dodo received a pass from Marlos and crossed into the penalty area, with Kayode’s overhead kick whizzing just inches off the near corner. Dodo could have also netted one himself: after perfectly playing one-two with Marlos, the right-back delivered it past Galchuk, but the defender cleared the ball away from the unguarded goal. In the 62nd minute, Kovalenko was substituted by Maksym Malyshev, for whom this was the first appearance since last July. Despite the comfortable score, the Miners were charging forward. First, Marlos cut off Mariupol’s entire defence with one passing move and brought Kayode one on one with the keeper, with the Nigerian delivering a clinical performance – 4-1. Dodo once again disturbed the goalkeeper with his attempt from outside the penalty area, with Galchuk turning the ball over the crossbar. Ten minutes away from time, Marlos received a long ball from the back, raced away to find himself one-on-one with the goalkeeper and rolled the ball to the onrushing Ivan Petriak, who sealed the win.
5-1 - Shakhtar claimed a major win at Mariupol and advanced to the Ukrainian Cup semi-finals to take on Dynamo on May 9.
On April 21, the Miners will have a Ukrainian League game. In Kharkiv, at the OSC Metalist, the team of Paulo Fonseca will entertain Vorskla. The match kicks off at 17:00. Tickets are available.
