Shakhtar U19 hosted Lyon U19 in the UEFA Youth League round 6

The Miners (2 points) lost their chances of advancing from the group and approached the match without any competitive pressure, while the French (10 points) had to win it to compete for the top spot. Andres Carrasco restored his usual formation. We also want to mention the debut appearance of the defensive midfielder Klym Prykhodko.

Unconverted advantage

The aspiration of Shakhtar players to claim their first win was noticeable from the very beginning of the game that was fully dominated by the hosts. Kulakov could score an early one - responding to a long delivery into the penalty area, the forward struck just wide. Shortly after that, the ball hit the back fo Lyon’s net, but the referee unruled the goal by Kaschuk after mistakenly registering the latter offside. Immediately after that, Bondarenko produced a dangerous attempt, with a defender managing to block it. The Orange-and-Blacks continued dominating it significantly, with major threat following Artem Holod's flank deliveries: Mykhailo Mudryk got on the end of his cross but failed to beat the keeper after two attempts, with Kulakov then trying to open the scoring only to see Barcola rescuing the French again.

Fatal minutes

The second half also started with attacks by the Miners: the same Mudryk was close to scoring a goal, but the goalkeeper managed to pick up the ball. Still, the perseverance of the hosts brought a result. In the 59th minute, Valerii Bondar brought Oleksii Kaschuk through on goal with his great high ball, the latter just lobbed the ball over the keeper without approaching him – 1-0. The Lyon side immediately rushed to equalise just to face the defenders headed by Anatolii Trubin who had coped with threats for long. At the same time, Andres Carrasco’s boys tried to respond with fast counterattacks, with Bondar being the closest to success: after getting on the end of Kaschuk’s corner, he missed the near corner by inches. In the end, the Frenchmen’s onslaught intensified, and in the fourth stoppage minute they saved the game. Griffiths took advantage of the penalty area scramble and hit the back of the net from close range.
