In the U21 League round 21, Shakhtar played Zirka at home

In the second consecutive home game, the Miners received the opponents on the synthetic pitch, which is fully justifiable given the poor weather conditions (snowy and -15 oC). Before the match, the team of Valeriy Kryventsov was left without two experienced players (Arendaruk and Ihnatenko went on loan to Mariupol), with Bondar, Korniienko and Kashchuk having played two games for Ukraine U19. They rejoined Shakhtar just recently. All three of them have appeared from the off today.

Perfect half

The Donetsk team got off to a very powerful start, opening the scoring in the 2nd minute: Roman Yalovenko made a superb use of Topalov's delivery from the left flank to make it 1-0. After that, the Miners could have netted two or three more goals, but Arabidze’s attempt went just inches above the crossbar, with more shots by Kaschuk and the same Arabidze being saved by the goalkeeper. In the 19th minute, even Medvedev could not do anything: Korniienko crossed from the left-hand side, with Roman Yalovenko grabbing a brace – 2-0. Shakhtar continued playing some fast, combinational football, creating multiple chances and netting one more goal. Dmytro Topalov raced down his wing, leaving behind a couple of opponents, then he entered the penalty area and planted the ball into the roof of the net – 3-0. The score could get bigger even before the break, but for the saves by Zirka keeper following the attempts of Yalovenko and Arabidze.

The game got level

In the second half, the Miners also controlled the ball and the space, still weakening the grip, so the visitors equalised. Valeriy Kryventsov gradually took advantage of all five substitutions, giving a chance to nearly all outfield players. Due to this, it was possible to maintain the pace and freshness, but sometimes the Orange-and-Blacks still lacked coherence and mutual understanding. However, the scoring chances still appeared in the visitors’ box only, with the Donetsk side netting the fourth goal in the 64th minute: Oleksii Kashchuk got one-on-one with Medvedev, coolly beat the keeper and rolled it into the back of the net – 4-0. The hosts’ attacking moves did not subside until the final whistle, however it was Zirka who scored one in the last minute, with Averyanov getting his name on the scoresheet. 4-1 – Shakhtar secured a confident win vs Zirka.

The Miners will play the closing match of the first league stage vs Karpaty in Lviv on March 3.
