On October 19, the Miners defeated Desna in Kharkiv

We sum up the round 12 game and bring you some interesting facts.

Tenth triumph

Shakhtar claimed their 10th win in the 2018/19 UPL campaign. For the first time ever, Taison has not appeared on the pitch due to injury. The champions played deploying two strikers - Junior Moraes and Olarenwaju Kayode.

Opponents

For the sake of achieving the result against the league leaders, Desna used the 5–3–2 formation for the first time this season. The Chernihiv team focussed on defence (ultimately winning the lowest percentage of individual challenges - 29%) and relied on the lightning-fast counterattacks (in the 7th and 86th minutes, the slaloming runs by Shakhtar’s Kartushov created chances for Filippov and Khlebas, with the first one shooting wide, and the second one’s attempt being denied by Kryvtsov).

Possession

The possession ratio was 70% to 30% in favour of Shakhtar. The peak period in this regard was before and after the sending off (from the 61st to the 75th minute) when the champions controlled the ball for 79% of the time.

Maycon is Man of the Match

The Shakhtar central midfielder delivered the maximum percentage of successful actions among all the participants in the encounter (84%). It was Maycon who struck on target on both occasions, one of which was victorious. The Brazilian has netted the second goal from the 80th to the 90th minute and brought the team a win (the previous time, he did so vs Hoffenheim in the UCL round 1, 2-2).

Stepanenko’s appearance

After getting short-handed, Paulo Fonseca fielded Stepanenko instead of Khocholava in the dying minutes. Taras, when necessary, either operated in tandem with Kryvtsov or advanced into the same line with Maycon, taking an important part in orchestrating attacks, completing 11 out of 11 passes at the average passing distance of 18.8 metres.
In the match vs Desna, Shakhtar made 100 passes into the last third of the pitch (they did more only vs Mariupol in the current UPL campaign - 105)
Milestone app makers

Andriy Pyatov has made his 400th appearance for Shakhtar and the 250th with the Miners in the league. Alan Patrick made his 50th UPL appearance, with Serhii Kryvtsov and Wellington Nem currently having 120 and 60 apps with Shakhtar in all competitions.

Small score

The Miners have claimed their first 1-0 win in the current football year. The record number of such outcomes under Paulo Fonseca happened in his first year in charge of the team (11). In the previous season, the Portuguese’s men twice had this score (vs Mariupol and Veres).

Kharkiv run

The Orange-and-Blacks have extended the current and longest unbeaten run at the OSK Metalist to 11 home games (since April 18, 2018).

This coming Tuesday of October 23, Shakhtar will entertain the English champions Manchester City in Kharkiv. The game kicks off at 22:00, with the tickets still available.
