Before the match
The teams approach the middle of the group stage without any points scored, so each subsequent meeting gets decisive in their competition for the knockout stages. In the early round, Shakhtar U19 suffered defeats at the hands of Hoffenheim (1-2, one goal scored by Andrii Kulakov) and Lyon (0-2), although they were not any inferior to the opponents neither performance quality wise nor for the number of the scoring chances created. The main personnel loss on the eve of the encounter with the Englishmen is the absence of Shakhtar’s defensive leader Valerii Bondar who earned a red card in the previous match.
Opponents
Last season's UEFA Youth League semi-finalists Manchester City unexpectedly lost both opening games of the current competition: the home fiasco vs Lyon (1-4, a goal scored by Felix Nmecha) and the major away defeat at Hoffenheim (2-5, the goals netted by Rabbi Matondo and Ian-Carlo Poveda) have been particularly motivating for the Englishmen in terms of their encounter with Shakhtar. The Citizens’ squad has seriously changed over the past six months and has become more international, with the 40-year-old Paul Harsley being in charge of the team. In the U18 English Premier League, the Man. City boys have not enjoyed any wins for two months now. After eight rounds, they rank fifth in the North Division, gaining only 9 points.
Head-to-head record
Shakhtar and Manchester City met in the 2017/18 UEFA Youth League group stage. Back then, the opponents exchanged home victories: 3-1 in England (Latibeaudiere, 43’, Foden, 49’, Richards, 90+4’ - Yakymets, 53’) and 2-1 on the Miners' field (Kaschuk, 20’, 67’ - Smith, 35’).
