Shakhtar and Dynamo met in the Premier League round 25 in Kyiv
The Miners approached the match with a 7-point advantage over the opponents (Shakhtar had 63 points vs Dynamo’s 56 points). Not so long ago, the teams played in the Ukrainian Cup, with Paulo Fonseca’s men celebrating the penalty shootout win back then. Today, Shakhtar’s manager has fielded Alan Patrick in midfield, Manor Solomon and Wellington Nem as wide forwards, with Junior Moraes returning into the attacking third.
No-risk play
For the entire first half, the opponents operated very cautiously, with the most dangerous chance being created early: Patrick found Nem in the penalty area, with the latter sending the ball over the crossbar. Initially, the hosts had more possession, but they failed to reach the shooting range. Then the situation levelled off, with the Miners making the first and only attempt on target before the break: Taison pierced the wall with his free-kick, but Boyko coped with the attempt. The Kyivans responded with a couple of dangerous crosses, but Verbic did not manage to get on the end of Tsyhankov’s pass, while de Pena’s high ball did not reach its addressee.
A chance in the dying seconds
Early in the second half, the sides raised the pace, bringing more fouls than threatening chances. In one of such episodes, Shakhtar earned a free-kick some 20 metres away from goal, with Alan Patrick taking it only to see it hit the wall. The coaches tried to refresh the play with a number of substitutions, including a few forced ones as Verbic and Stepanenko were injured. In the final 10 minutes, the Dynamo team were prevented from getting any closer to Andriy Pyatov’s goal, oh, meanwhile the Orange-and-Blacks created a couple of scoring opportunities: first, Ismaily produced a spectacular bicycle-kick from tight angle just to see the ball hit the outside of the net, then Solomon dribbled down the right wing, beat two opponents and then crossed a threatening attempt into the penalty area, with no one there to finish it off. The climax came in the extra time: in the third stoppage minute, Burda brought down Dentinho in the box, with the referee awarding a penalty kick. Moraes’s attempt towards the left corner was parried away by Boyko.
0-0 - Shakhtar and Dynamo were tied, with the gap between the teams remaining unchanged. On Sunday, April 28, the Miners will have another away game - vs Mariupol. It kicks off at 14:00.
