In the U21 League round 4, Shakhtar played Lviv away
The Miners started the season with three comeback victories and came for the game as the league leaders. In the opening rounds, the Lviv team scored 3 points and settled down at the bottom of the table. This time, there were no first-team players in Shakhtar U21, but Yevhen Hrytsenko and Mykhailo Mudryk returned to the starting lineup, with Dmytro Pavlish taking a place at left-back, and Andrii Boriachuk having the centre-forward role again.
The game took place in Dobrotvir (Lviv region), where a Come On, Let’s Play! branch was opened. Many children participating in the project came to support the Shakhtar U21 team.
Clinical finishing
The hopes of Shakhtar’s young fans started to get fulfilled from the opening minutes. No sooner had the sides run enough to warm up than Shakhtar U21 opened the scoring: a blistering attack by the visitors ended in Kryskiv’s delivery to the right wing, with Oleh Ocheretko diagonally hitting the far corner, making it 0-1. For a while, the initiative passed to the Lviv outfit, but they did not create anything more dangerous than a couple of set-pieces and a solo slaloming run by Velves. Shakhtar quickly regained control and moved the play into the central zone, with the opponents exchanging scoring chances late in the first half. Hrytsenko prevented Nych from scoring by winning a one-on-one challenge, while the visitors converted their chance: Bondarenko brought the ball into the opposing penalty area and sent it to the left-hand side, Pavlish crossed it to the edge of the goal area, Boriachuk tripped and swept the ball into the bottom corner of the net – 0-2.
The half under pressure
From the start of the second half, Lviv actively charged forward, continuously keeping Shakhtar’s defenders in suspense. Nych sent the ball high from close range, with Khymchak cutting inside from the right flank and also firing it over the crossbar. The hosts’ multiple set-pieces were also dangerous. The Shakhtar players responded with quick and sharp counterattacks: thus, Boriachuk received the ball on the left-hand side of the penalty area and made a powerful attempt from a tight angle - Kostik hardly parried it away. After a number of substitutions, the Orange-and-Blacks created a couple more good chances: Boriachuk adjusted the ball after Muravskyi’s strike, but hit the goalkeeper, while Kholod’s attempt fed by Bondarenko went high above the target. Late in the game, the pressure by Lviv only increased and brought fruit. Hrytsenko first came to the team’s rescue after a long-ranger by Karvatskyi, but could not do anything about the same player’s direct free-kick.
2-1 - Shakhtar defeated Lviv in a difficult match and continue topping the U21 League table. In the next round, at 15:00 on August 22, the Miners will receive Mariupol at home.
