The U21 teams of Zorya and Shakhtar finished the calendar year with the league round 18 game in Zaporizhia

The Miners had their previous match a fortnight ago in Mariupol. But the starting lineup featured the players who had been fielded by Fernando Valente in Wednesday’s UEFA Youth League game: Muravskyi, Kryskiv, Ocheretko, Bondarenko, and Mudryk. Plus Chyruk appeared as an attacking spearhead after playing 45 minutes vs Atalanta.

Ineffective half

The teams energetically started it and carried out several blistering attacks. In the 8th minute, Kryskiv passed the ball to Mudryk, but Mykhailo Vasko managed to clear the ball for a corner. The Zorya defenders neutralized a few more threats by Shakhtar, not allowing the Miners to approach the goal for shooting. And in the 34th minute, the Luhansk team scored: Alefyrenko hit the left corner from outside the box, with Hrytsenko being unable to do anything. A little later, the goalscorer threatened Shakhtar’s goal again, with Yevhen saving it in this case, just like he saved Milchenko’s attempt before the break.

Comeback win

Early in the second half, not everything worked in Shakhtar’s attacking, meanwhile, Zorya did not sit deep down their half. One of the most active players was Belotserkovets who ran away from Shakhtar midfielders and defenders a couple of times, with one of his attempts lacking accuracy, and the other one being kicked off by Hrytsenko. Chyruk's goal changed the situation in the 62nd minute: Bondarenko and Prykhodko participated in the goal-scoring move. The teams produced some end-to-end action. Immediately after equalizing, Hrytsenko made two saves following attempts by Belotserkovets and Shalfeev. Fernando Valente’s men produced a number of unsuccessful set-pieces - it lasted until the 82nd minute when another high-ball delivery by Mudryk finally paid off: Melichenko finished off a Pavlish assist, making it 1-2. It is the second time when Kyrylo has brought his team 3 points (on November 21, he scored a double late in the match vs Lviv).

Fernando Valente’s young men are now leaving for a winter break in the group of leaders, having gained 38 points in 16 matches. The title race against Vorskla and Dynamo will continue in February.
