In the Premier League round 16, Shakhtar played Mariupol away
The league leaders Shakhtar set off for the Donbass derby without 7 players, including the top scorer Junior Moraes. He was replaced on the pitch by the young Danylo Sikan. Also, Luis Castro entrusted the central defenders Valerii Bondar and David Khocholava with places in the starting XI and fielded Serhii Bolbat at right-back. We also want to mention the return of team captain Taison.
Early goal
The Orange-and-Blacks got off to a more active start and were the first to create a scoring opportunity (Tete’s attempt went just inches off the post) and score the opener (in the 15th minute, Konoplyanka earned a spot-kick which was confidently converted by Taison - 0-1). Continuing to control the ball, the Orange-and-Blacks had a couple of good opportunities. Marcos Antonio made a long-range attempt (wide), with Konoplyanka’s attempt being blocked by a defender. The Mariupol team responded with Tischenko’s free-kick that hit the post, with Bondar stopping consecutive attempts of Yavorskyi and Dawa.
Level scoreline
As soon as the second half kicked off, the hosts equalised. Following a high cross, Putrya was the first on the rebound and hit the back of the net from a few-metre range. Shakhtar rushed to score the second one, with Konoplyanka being close to fulfilling it: at first, the teammates brought Yevhen to a good scoring position only to see him hit Halchuk, with the winger then bursting into the penalty area on the left-hand side and missing the far corner. Sikan had the best scoring chance midway through the second half: after a corner, the ball got to the striker’s feet just to be cleared by an Azov team defender off the goal line. The Miners continued attacking until the final whistle, with neither the subs Boriachuk and Solomon nor the active Ismaily and Taison succeeding in netting the winner.
1-1 - Shakhtar shared points with Mariupol. The team of Luis Castro will play the next two games in Kharkiv. On December 6, as part of the Ukrainian Championship, the Miners will host Olimpik (at 19:00), and on December 11 they will play Atalanta in the Champions League (19:55). Tickets can be purchased at the OSK Metalist ticket office, the city’s retail outlets, and online.
