Shakhtar hosted Olimpik in the Ukrainian Premier League round 17

The Miners remain unbeaten in the league, having amassed 14 victories in 16 games alongside just 2 draws (44 points). The Olympians produced some powerful performance over the last month and returned to the middle of the table (8th place, 18 points). Despite the nearing Champions League match vs Atalanta, Luis Castro fielded the strongest lineup with Taison on the left of attack Viktor Kovalenko just behind the striker. Marlos, who recovered from an injury, has also made it on the player list, with Tete appearing instead of him from the off though.

Powerful start

The hosts launched an attack and opened the scoring early. They delivered three corners in a row, with the last one being successful: Tete crossed it into the penalty area, Politylo cleared the ball, but the central defender of Shakhtar Mykola Matviienko was the first on the rebound to plant his precision effort into the left corner - 1-0. Immediately, Patrick could have scored the second one, but for the goal going wide while completing the move involving Kovalenko and Moraes and right into the goalkeeper. Junior also had a great chance: the striker found himself opposite the unguarded goal only to swing his foot past the ball while challenging the defenders. Throughout the first half, the Orange-and-Blacks had a tangible advantage and made 9 attempts at goal, still failing to build on their success. A minute away from the break, Viktor Kovalenko was close to scoring, also failing to send Ismaily’s delivery home. Another opportunity was wasted by Tete who struck it to Krynskyi’s feet.

Marlos's goal-scoring return

The Miners continued to create chances early in the second half. Tete cooly fed Patrick at the edge of the goal area only to see Alan wave it pass the ball. Tete himself tried to bend it into the far corner - the ball went just wide. Midway through the send half, Marlos came on for Tete and after 10 minutes fired a Moraes assist home to finish off the teammates’ move - 2-0. Enjoying a comfortable score, Luis Castro’s men allowed themselves to slow down and calmly lead the match to victory. In the stoppage time, they sealed the win through Ismaily’s finish after Taison’s cannon shot.

3-0 - Shakhtar demolished Olimpik and begin to prepare for this year’s major game.
