Shakhtar rounded off its training camp in Turkey with a test game vs Wacker, Austria

Over 10 days of preparation on the second training camp in Belek, the Miners - in addition to daily training - managed to hold a series of test games (3 wins and 1 loss). The final encounter saw the squad very close to the major team squad. However, there was a change just before the kickoff: instead of the captain Taison, Manor Solomon appeared in the winger role.

Tangible advantage

Shakhtar got off to a powerful start and retained the ball almost throughout the first half, playing it for a long time in the opposing half. Early in the game, Ismaily found himself one on one with Knett, with the goalkeeper just knocking the ball out from under his feet. Viktor Kovalenko made it past his opponent while entering the box, with the latter clearly fouling while blocking the Ukrainian, but the referee did not award a spot kick. Manor Solomon was active in the left winger role, often racing past one or two opponents, and threatening by sharp deliveries into the penalty area. The best moment of the first half happened a few minutes before the break: Marlos gracefully brought Moraes through on goal, with Junior directing the ball goalwards, but the latter hit the crossbar, Kovalenko played on the rebound and fired it home just to be flagged offside.

Pressure to the last minute

The beginning of the second half was also bossed by the Miners, who surpassed the opponents both in terms of ball control and dangerous attacks. Already at the start, the Orange-and-Blacks could have opened the score: Bolbat brought Moraes one on one with the keeper by his excellent splitting pass, with the Brazilian deciding not to shoot himself and to roll the ball along the unguarded goal to Solomon, but Manor failed to reach the ball. Moraes tried to adjust his body to receive Bolbat’s cross from the right, but the Austrian defender did not allow the Shakhtar forward to shoot it. Paulo Fonseca gradually brought some fresh footballers into play, with Fernando being the most active of them. First, the Brazilian was close to scoring after being fed by Moraes (the Wacker defender managed to intercept it), and then the young winger attempted a shot from close range, but the ball went high due to a sliding tackle by Handl. The final whistle signalled the 0-0 draw.

Shakhtar are completing their Turkish training camp and returning to Ukraine, where they will continue to prepare for the UEFA Europa League round of 32 first leg vs Eintracht. The game will kick off at 22:00 on February 14, in Kharkiv. Tickets are available at the OSK Metalist ticket office and on shakhtar.com.
