Shakhtar U16 coach Volodymyr Samborskyi spoke about the team's way to the championship, the final tournament and his players’ potential
- Congratulations on winning the Ukrainian League title! What impressions did this season and the final match leave?
- Thank you for your congratulations! We set the highest goals for the championship at the beginning of the season, with us going together to reach our goal throughout those months. It’s true that the guys found it tough, there were many new things for them, but today, at the end of the way, I can say that I’m proud of the team and of every player. For example, at the main stage, we didn’t suffer a single defeat, we drew just three times and conceded only three goals. And in the final tournament, we won all matches with the goal difference of 17–0. So we can be happy with our job. This is the merit of all the coaches who worked with this group both at children's school and in previous seasons. This is a victory of the whole Academy!
- Was it difficult to pass the season without any defeats?
- You know, I am just lucky to work with these guys - the players born in 2003. The guys are very diligent and executive: they work with full dedication, quickly grasping all tasks and explanations, fulfilling them on the pitch. As for the results, we set the objective of winning each game. We primarily tried not to give our opponents the opportunity to create chances, and not to concede any goals. Gradually, from match to match, we got confident, ultimately managing to pass the season without any defeats.
- Which match was key at the final stage?
- In our subgroup, all the rivals were tough: both UFK-Karpaty and Smena-Obolon. But our main win was probably the 3-0 victory over Dynamo. After it, we felt really confident and realized that we could beat any opponents. This also helped us in both the semi-final against Dnipro and the final match against Skala.
- The next one will be the graduation season for the team. What prospects do you see in this group?
- We’ve still got another season to work with the guys, but I think that many of them are already ready to move to senior football. Perhaps, some of them will be tested at Shakhtar U19, with everything depending on them there. The potential of the players is very high, and our task is to bring them to the level of the first team.
