On March 22, the national team of Ukraine started their UEFA Euro 2020 qualifying campaign

In Lisbon, Andriy Shevchenko's men met with the current European champions Portugal. The Shakhtar goalkeeper Andriy Pyatov played with the captain’s armband on; the Miners Sergii Kryvtsov, Mykola Matviienko, Taras Stepanenko, and Marlos also appeared in the starting line-up.

Pyatov’s great performance

The hosts were expectedly sharper, threatening the opponents’ goal. The Ukrainians held back a formidable attack led by Ronaldo, with Kryvtsov most often operating against the Portuguese leader. And yet, Cristiano managed to produce a couple of dangerous shots on target in the first half, with Pyatov rescuing his team on both occasions.

10 minutes after the break, Andriy jumped to save Andre Silva's bent attempt towards the far corner. In general, the goalkeeper showed great reflexes, being focussed on each episode and neutralised all efforts of the Portuguese up until the final whistle.

Moraes’s debut

In the 76th minute, an important event in the life of Junior Moraes happened - he made his first appearance in the national team shirt number 19. Interestingly, regardless of the highly active second-half performance of the Portuguese, the visitors might even snatch a victory. Junior was right in the thick of the action: Patricio parried away an attempt by Konoplyanka, Moraes finished it off from a three-metre range, but Dias managed to stop him in the nick of time.

The scoreline is 0-0, with Ukraine taking away a draw from Lisbon. Andriy Shevchenko’s side will play their next game vs Luxembourg on March 25.
